NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — The mother of one of the Waffle House victims, DeEbony Groves, created a foundation in her daughter’s name, hoping to help grieving mothers.

Shirl Baker says she’s cried every day for the last 15 months, and that doesn’t even describe her pain. Her daughter, DeEbony, was one of four people who died in the shooting last year.

For Baker, suddenly losing her only daughter is still indescribable.

But in May of this year, she attended this women’s conference in Florida sponsored by the Trayvon Martin Foundation and says was the best weekend she’s had since DeEbony died.

“I met 40-plus mothers from all over the world that have lost kids. We cried together, we celebrated together, we prayed together,” Baker says.

That experience has motivated Baker to start the DeEbony Groves Foundation called “Hope 4 the Future.” She wants to help other moms find that connection to help them heal.

Even though moving on has been terribly hard, she said she found inspiration in the new project.

“We are going to reach out to mothers in Tennessee only that have lost a child or multiple children through tragic death and offer support, empowerment and inject a support group that is healthy,” she says.

A project that’s given her a new purpose – honoring DeEbony’s life by helping others.
